Centre for Research in Dharmashashtra and Indic Jurisprudence

About Centre

The study of Jurisprudence in the modern sense, has excessively been euro-centric and owes much of its development to western thinkers and thoughts. Curiously enough, the Indian soil too had given genesis to many thousands of thinkers, who developed a set of principles and legal system known as the Indic Jurisprudence. This ancient legal system is premised upon the concept of “Dharma”. Dharma; a Sanskrit expression of the widest possible import. A word that can never be defined in rigid or exact terms but can only be explained according to circumstances. For it, has innumerable meanings with innumerable connotations; it is justice (known as “nyaya”), it is the right set of moral values that frame human life, it is the righteous conduct, it is the pious obligations of a human, it is generosity, it is the rules which determine judicial proceedings, it is a duty, it is law.

Although having, such an extensive, all-encompassing domain, the study of the Indic thoughts of Jurisprudence has not been given much primacy. Neither in India nor abroad. This exactly is the issue that this Centre aims to tackle. The Centre for Dharmashastric and Indic Jurisprudence is a student-run centre which aims to work towards kindling interests in the legal fraternity about the crucial role of Dharmashastras and Indic Jurisprudence. The intent of the formation of this Centre is to pursue and encourage innovative scholarship and research in this realm of study. In this endeavour, the Centre would associate with scholars and interested parties and exploit every opportunity to serve the purpose. The activities intended to be undertaken by the Centre will ensure that the key stakeholders are provided with ample opportunities and great knowledge.
